Big Problem
Let me see if I have this figured out: The world's fattest nation, with the world's fattest debt-- consumer, state, federal, corporate; the greatest consumer of energy, the greatest polluter; now officially printing money we don't have, borrowing obscenely from our "friends," our MBAs and CEOS having sent our manufacturing strength and jobs overseas for 40 years (then often rewarding themselves by giving themselves bonuses approximating the "savings" to the company)-- now are convinced something is "wrong" with the economy and that once we "fix" it, life will "get back to normal." Is this the general picture? In the words of NASA, "Houston, I think we have a problem." Let's hope there is something here Congress and the President understand that the rest of us do not, and that whatever this is, is good

First Day of Spring
As the morons at AIG game the system, humiliate themselves, enrage us, stir up Congress and help clarify what some of our difficulties are made of, and while those in financial circles grasp to protect themselves from what they themselves have wrought on so many citizens, I like the words of a tv-talkinghead who today says, "Somewhere out there the next Steve Jobs is experimenting with a new idea, a new product in his garage, the next Bill Gates is monkeying with a new device, the next  Michael Dell is developing a new business model....and we'll be ok."  Welcome spring!

Positive Outlook
A senior banker friend and colleague tells of "Black Friday," a day in the office, recently, when colleagues in his Trust Department were terminated-- not an accurate reference, but I get his unmistakable drift. He confirms, "Yes, we in this economic downturn are in unchartered waters, no telling where we will come out or when." A neighbor, a former executive in the jewelry industry, lost her job two weeks ago and the company folded within 24 hours-- 150 people. If you didn't see it in the news the day after, you missed it, but it happened," this mother of a 3-year old says. "The whole industry seems to be on the verge," she offers, as she rattles off names of several prominent brands, now in trouble. I, for one, intend to wake up tomorrow to do what has to be done, what must be done, and to help uncover how we can make a real difference in this circumstance.

Bitter Winds
One more storm has blown through this area. More shoveling, digging out. Markets tank. Confidence-- respect, are diminishing like Crocus bulbs beneath banks of new snow. I am hoping to find strength more akin to Forsythia, which is surely on its way.
